Nigeria is known as the most religious country in the world. It several large churches. In this post, i want to list the biggest churches in Nigeria, although it will be extremely difficult to ascertain the exact of people attending a particular church. Therefore, this list is based on findings, reports, questions and assumptions. We have 7 churches on our list of biggest churches in Nigeria.

Catholic Church
Unfortunately, if you check the internet for the list of biggest church in Nigeria, you will find out that more attention is given to Pentecostal churches. But then, the truth cannot be swept under the carpet as we all know that the Roman Catholic church is the first on the list of biggest churches in Nigeria. The Roman Catholic church is also the biggest and richest church in the world. It has a membership of more than 3.5 million members. Sadly, most of the registered members of many Pentecostal churches are Catholics. Catholic remains the biggest church in Nigeria.

The next on the list of biggest churches in Nigeria is the Anglican church. Although, it is important to know that most of the Pentecostal churches holds as much as 4 services every Sunday, yet the Catholic and Anglican population are far more that them. The head of the Anglican Church of Nigeria is the primate who resides in Abuja and from there, oversees the general activities of the church. The Anglican of Nigeria has more than 100 Dioceses. Most of these Dioceses has more than 75 churches in them with an average population of 500 members per parish. Thus, the Anglican church of Nigeria has a population of about 3 million members.

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG)
The Redeemed Christian Church of God seems to be about the biggest Pentecostal church. It was founded by Josiah Akindayomi in 1952, and it has since grown in size and popularity quite significantly. RCCG’s current General Overseer is Enoch Adeboye, who was appointed by the late Akindayomi himself in 1981. The church is considered to be Protestant by classification, Pentecostal by orientation and Evangelical by theology. The church’s headquarters is at Lagos-Ibadan Express road, Mowe, Ogun State. It has presence in 196 countries across the world, and it does not seem like that is the end, as RCCG is still growing.

Living Faith Church Worldwide winners
Living Faith Church Worldwide, also known as Winners Chapel is the fourth biggest church in the country but the second largest Pentecostal church. The church started in 1983, by Bishop David Oyedepo. Winners Chapel is Evangelical by classification and Neo-charismatic by theology. One of the most recognizable features of this church is the giant church complex named Canaanland in Ota, which houses the church’s headquarters, also known as Faith Tabernacle. It is said to fit 50,400 people, as well as the outside overflow capacity of 250,000. At one point, it was the largest church building in the world.

Christ Embassy Christ embassy
Christ Embassy is also know as Believers’ LoveWorld Incorporated. It was founded in 1987 by Chris Oyakhilome in Lagos, and today, it has spread its reach all over the world with about 13 million members across the globe. Christ Embassy has its own television stations in several countries, including Nigeria, USA, India and the UK, as well as its own publishing house named Loveworld Publications.

MFM seems to be the youngest one. It was founded in 1989 by Daniel Kolawole Olukoya, who held a prayer meeting in his living room in Yaba, Lagos. Five years later, the newly-founded church had its first service on what had once been an abandoned slum not far from the University of Lagos. Over the years, the size of the congregation grew significantly. It has branches in the UK, Canada, the US, as well as in several other countries across the world. Deeper Life Bible Church
The church was founded by Pastor Williams Folorunsho Kumuyi in 1973. It is also known as Deeper Christian Life Ministry. Its headquarters can be found in Lagos, while its branches spread to Russia, India, Sub-Saharan Africa, Western Europe and North America. Deeper Life Bible Church started out as a small Bible study group with 15 people. Over the years, this small number has turned into thousands and spread around all over the world. It is quite popular on Facebook, where it has over 170 thousand followers. Pastor W.F.Kumuyi who is the founder and General Superintendent of the church is popularly referred to as GS by his members. The church is known for its high standard of holiness and decent dressing.
